Formal Training Day – “Backing”

While upland bird hunters encounter an array of heart-pounding sights, there is something both classic and captivating, graceful and marvellous about watching a dog back another. Backing (also called honouring) is when one dog sees another dog on point, stops and points that dog and does not intrude on the pointing dog’s find. “Honoring a point” is essential in both hunting and during field trials.

Start preparing your dog for next year’s hunting season now and attend this amazing hands-on training session.

The training will be presented by our Committee Member, Francois van der Walt, who gained valuable knowledge during his time in the United States with Jon Hann of Perfection Kennels, and Trudi Winter, co-founder of SAVDHA, co-writer of our now KUSA acknowledged Versatile Hunting Tests. Trudi is also an A-Panel Field Trial judge for HPR, Retriever and VHT and B-Panel judge for Spaniels. Both, Francois and Trudi, has vast experience on this topic.

Space is limited to 12 dogs participating on the day. Spectators are welcome. Please book in advance.

Bring along:

• Leashes
• Water for your dog
• Own refreshments and snacks
• Comfortable shoes, hat and sunscreen

We welcome pups for bird introduction with prior arrangement.

We will have a light lunch break before ending the session, weather permitting. Ensure that your dog’s tick control is up to date.
